Summary

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the umbrella organization for all national Olympic committees worldwide. It is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, and manages all aspects of the Olympic Games globally. 205 countries are affiliated with the IOC, with several national Olympic committees being recognized at various IOC Sessions.

In response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the IOC suspended athletes from Russia and Belarus from competing in any Olympic-related events, and suspended all officials from these countries from officiating at any event sanctioned by the IOC, as well as from attending or participating in any IOC meetings, committees, and forums. In March 2023, the Russian Olympic Committee sent a letter addressing the IOC and pleading them to reverse the decision and allow Russian athletes to compete in Olympic events. The ROC's statement included claims that the war was instigated by Ukraine and that 'Russia defends peace'. In May 2023, the International Olympic Committee reinstated Russian and Belarusian athletes, shortly after a Russian missile attack forced the cancellation of a sports event in Ukraine.
