Summary

Handball is a team sport that requires players to use their hands to hit a small, rubber ball into the opposing team's goal. It is played on a court of varying sizes, with seven players on each team, including a goalkeeper. This fast-paced, high-scoring game requires skill, speed, strength, and teamwork.

Handball players need to possess a combination of physical and technical skills, including agility, quick decision-making, accurate throwing and catching, and the ability to work well in a team. It's an intense, physically demanding sport that requires great endurance and tactical understanding.

Key Types of handball

Team Handball

  • Indoor Sport: Played on a court measuring 40m by 20m. Teams score by throwing the ball into the opponent's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of two 30-minute halves wins.

Beach Handball

  • Outdoor Variation: Played on a sand court. The rules are slightly different, with scoring often based on the difficulty of the shots. It's a faster, more dynamic version of the game.

Field Handball

  • Outdoor Sport: The predecessor of modern handball, played on grass fields. Although less common today, it's still played in some parts of the world.

Wheelchair Handball

  • Inclusive Sport: Adapted for athletes with physical disabilities. It follows similar rules to team handball but is played with wheelchairs, providing an inclusive sporting opportunity.

Mini Handball

  • Youth Sport: Designed for children and beginners. It's played on a smaller court with fewer players, providing a fun and accessible introduction to the sport.
Competitions
  • Handball is part of the Summer Olympic Games, with both men's and women's competitions.
  • The International Handball Federation (IHF) organizes world championships for men and women in both indoor and beach handball.
  • There are also numerous national and regional leagues and tournaments around the world.
