Summary

Water Polo is a highly competitive and physically demanding team sport. It is usually played in a swimming pool and involves two teams, each comprising seven players including the goalkeeper. The objective of the game is to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins.

Water Polo requires a high level of stamina, as players are not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool and must tread water or swim throughout the game. It also demands excellent ball-handling skills, strategic play, and teamwork.

Key Types of Water Polo

Outdoor Water Polo

  • Played in outdoor pools, often in warmer climates. The pool size can vary, but the standard size is 30m x 20m. The game consists of four quarters, each lasting eight minutes.

Indoor Water Polo

  • Played in indoor pools, allowing for year-round play regardless of weather conditions. The pool size and game duration are the same as outdoor water polo.

Beach Water Polo

  • Played in shallow sea waters or man-made pools on the beach. The field is smaller, and the game is faster paced with fewer players, usually 4-on-4.

Underwater Water Polo

  • An underwater variant of water polo. Players wear fins and play in a deeper pool. The goals are situated on the bottom of the pool.

Mixed Water Polo

  • A version of water polo where both men and women play together in the same team. This format is becoming more popular and is recognized by several national and international governing bodies.
Competitions
  • Water Polo is an Olympic sport, with competitions for both men's and women's teams.
  • The FINA Water Polo World Cup and the FINA World Water Polo Championships are two of the most prestigious international tournaments.
  • At the regional level, competitions include the European Championships, the Asian Games, and the Pan American Games.
  • Nationally, many countries have their own leagues and championships, such as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in the United States.
