Judo

Judo is a modern martial art, combat, and Olympic sport that was created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. It involves two players (judoka) who attempt to throw or takedown each other to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue each other with a grappling maneuver, joint lock, or strangle hold, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold or choke.

Judo requires not only physical strength but also strategic skill and knowledge of the opponent's movements. It is a physically demanding and highly competitive sport.

Kata

• Pre-arranged Forms: These are formal demonstrations of judo techniques with a partner. They are used to teach the principles of the sport and to preserve its cultural and philosophical aspects.

Randori

• Free Practice: This is the freestyle practice of judo, where techniques are executed on a resisting partner. It is an essential part of training in judo.

Shiai

• Contest: The actual competition where judoka compete against each other. Points are scored for throws, holds, and submission techniques.

• Judo is part of the Olympic Games, featuring numerous weight categories for both men and women.
• World Judo Championships are organized by the International Judo Federation (IJF) annually, except in the years when the Olympic Games are held.
