Summary

Rowing sports involve propelling a boat using a set of oars manipulated by the rower. Various types of water conditions are tackled, from serene lakes to turbulent rivers. The two main disciplines are sweep rowing and sculling, which are differentiated by the number of oars used, as well as the position of the rower.

Rowing sports require strength, endurance, and technique, making them highly competitive and physically demanding activities.

Key Types of Rowing

Sweep Rowing

  • Team Racing: This race involves a team where each rower handles a single oar. Team sizes can vary from pairs to eight people, with some boats including a coxswain who steers the boat and coordinates the power and rhythm of the rowers.

Sculling

  • Solo or Team Racing: In sculling, each rower uses two oars, one in each hand. Sculling can be done solo, in pairs, or in fours. Sculling requires skilled coordination and balance as rowers have to control two oars simultaneously.

Indoor Rowing

  • Simulated Racing: This type of rowing is done on rowing machines. It can be used for training or for competitive indoor rowing events, testing rowers' strength and endurance.

Coastal or Offshore Rowing

  • Sea Racing: This is rowing carried out on the sea or other large bodies of water. Coastal rowing boats are more robust and stable to handle the waves and wind conditions.
Competitions
  • Rowing sports are a part of the Olympic Games, with events in both sweep rowing and sculling disciplines.
  • There are also world championships organized by the World Rowing Federation (FISA) for various disciplines, including indoor and coastal rowing.
